THE TIME FOR TALK IS OVER!!
Our band is a three piece instrumental that could be best described as a mixture of heavy and melodic groove metal. No no singer before you all ask and generally do!!! however we are not adverse to vocals on some tracks and are waiting for mr or mrs right..please dont apply if your name is Right.
Getting to where we are now has been a long and very fraught road, some might say well where are you...? True we are no where near the finish line, but given that this our 3rd attempt at a band for me and gareth and 2nd with Paul I would say we have progressed significantly and with our recordings being released soon and gigs lined up things aren't looking too bad.
Myself and gareth have been in bands since we were the age of 16, all those years ago inspired by the mighty Def Leppard, who would have thought they would have caused all this...then along comes Metallica and our band began to take shape as a four piece, me on guitar and vocals, gareth on guitar and two other friends on drums and bass respectfully...This was our first mistake, getting 2 friends to join your band simply because of convenient house placement and the fact we all played football together is a no go, what compounded this terrible attempt was their severe lack of any inkling of skill,(bare in mind neither of these members played an instrument, we just thought i would be a good idea if they learn) but being young and blinded by Pantera's home video we plodded on writing and actually had around 10 songs, (the home recording is still played on many a drunken evening). What always strikes me is the fact out drummer, and i use this term loosely, was recording in my parents house one sun afternoon while me and gareth threw socks at him....anyway....we played in front of a respected band who held no punches in telling us to get rid of the other two members....1 down......
This moves us on the Shatter the Sun...things should now be easier, around 4 years later, me Gareth, Paul a drummer from Newtownards and Gareths FRIEND from work (there it is again)....This band was quite heavy, we practised religiously and in 2005 we recorded our first demo and here comes the pain..............the drummer felt during the recording it was not for him, off he trundled back to Newtownards and if i might say one of the better Mcdonalds in the world, so down another member, we needed a drummer fast, up steps the machine we called Rab, a strange man with strange ideas and a very slow way of speaking about him, a bit like the boring priest in Father Ted, but he could drum and quickly. The problem now was things had speeded up and due to the fact our previous drummer had been only adequate we thought we had found the king of drummers...lesson 2, don't judge people based on previous experience cos the previous experience may have been bad, therefore anything will seem better in comparison. We geared up to go back to recording and finish what we had started......however the band had now gone from a 5 to a 4 piece (a guitarist bites the dust), i was back on guitar and vocals and the pace of playing was ever increasing, could it get any quicker...oh yes! Recording started and finished almost in the blink of an eye, everyone breathless wondering what had just happened, oh yes Rab....while we were regaining our composure, Rab proceeded to inform us that he had ME, now forgive me for my lack of empathy, but surely there was a moment preceding this that may have been more appropriate then the recording studio. What this then meant was that due to his fast but ultimately sloppy drumming many takes were going to be needed, but with our drummer fading with his new found disease we had little time..long story short, recording was a shambles with the producer spending days trying to sort out the tangled mess of cymbals and kick drum hits...end result poor, to add insult to injury, the drummer never paid for it, we all did, and had to pay more due to his lack of competency....still sore about that one. The band quickly dissolved after that with our other guitarist finding the whole ordeal too much, a mid life crisis at 21 ensued where he sold all his gear, cut his hair and disowned myself and the band, oh yes and to be sure I would never see him again he moved to Australia, not much chance of me there, too warm and I hate spiders, job done.
So a break was had by all, I moved away to Jersey for a couple of years with my lovely Fiancee although i often think I left her there, don't think the same one came home with me ;-)....however while in Jersey the music bug struck again, I decided I wanted to learn drums, something I had wanted to do from Primary school, drums it was then. When I moved home in 2008 I decided to try again with Gareth and Paul, less people what could go wrong with 3.....cough cough.......so we have been practising and have stuck with the instrumental idea, although we have tried adding another guitar, which was good, the guy doing the guitaring was not so, not skill wise, but his lack of time and commitment were a problem, nice guy great guitarist, unfortunately just not to be.
We have recorded at the end of last year with a superb producer called Neal Caulderwood (Manor Park Studios) and tracks are now up on myspace and we enjoyed a two week success in the NICharts, holding the number 2 slot for a week then number 4.
The band is still growing and we have recently added an electronic element to it, we are gigging and have and will enter any competition. I hope we can make ago of it, i think it would be fantastic getting up to a job that you ultimately love, how lucky could one man be.....but the bills have to be paid and until then we will never give up...we will play anywhere with anyone......WE are DEAL AGAIN.
